Ever since DreamWorks announced the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, fans have held their breath nervous, excited, and a little skeptical. Would Toothless still be charming in CGI? Would Hiccup’s awkward heart shine through in human form? Now that the movie is finally out, we have our answer.
And the answer is: mostly yes. How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is a lovingly crafted, visually stunning reimagining that honors the soul of the original trilogy, while offering new dimensions to a story many of us grew up with.
The Story:
The film retells the story of Hiccup, the misfit Viking teenager who changes everything when he befriends a dragon specifically the rare and feared Night Fury, later named Toothless. If you've seen the original 2010 animated film, you'll recognize most of the beats: the dragon raids, Hiccup’s awkwardness, the secret training sessions, the bond of trust, and the ultimate shift in Viking–dragon relations.
However, this version slightly expands on character backstories. Astrid, for example, has more screen time and a stronger emotional arc. There’s a slightly heavier tone, reflecting the real-world setting, which trades cartoon humor for emotional depth without losing heart.
Toothless & the Dragons: CGI Magic at Its Best
Let’s be honest: Toothless was the biggest concern for most fans. Could a CGI dragon capture the same charm and expressions as his animated version?
Surprisingly yes. The VFX team deserves applause. Toothless feels alive. His eyes, his body language, even his goofy reactions are so well animated that you genuinely forget you're watching pixels. Flight scenes are dazzling, and the scale of the dragons (especially the final battle) is breathtaking.
The world of Berk is beautifully realized too, blending physical sets with digital magic to create a believable Viking environment.
Themes That Still Resonate
Like the original, this film is about understanding the unknown, questioning inherited beliefs, and finding your voice even when it means going against tradition.
What hits harder in this version is the emotional tension. Hiccup’s struggle for approval, Astrid’s cautious loyalty, and Stoick’s fear of change feel more relatable in live-action. For young audiences, it's inspiring. For older fans, it's nostalgic with a mature edge.

The Cast: Strong Leads with Real Chemistry
Mason Thames (The Black Phone) steps into the huge boots of Hiccup. He brings vulnerability, curiosity, and courage. He’s less quirky than the animated Hiccup, but more grounded, which works well in live-action.Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid is fierce and intelligent, with great on-screen presence. Her chemistry with Hiccup evolves naturally and never feels forced.
Gerard Butler reprises his role as Stoick, and honestly? He’s even better this time. Stoick’s fatherly struggle is more heartfelt when performed in live action, and Butler nails it.
Nick Frost as Gobber adds the perfect blend of humor and wisdom, giving us some of the best comic relief in the film.
🎶 Music & Atmosphere
Composer John Powell returns with an updated score, blending themes from the original soundtrack with richer orchestration and new motifs. From the quiet moments of bonding to the epic aerial battles, the music elevates every scene.
Cinematography deserves praise as wellfilming in Northern Ireland gives the movie a majestic, grounded feel that makes Berk look like a place you could actually visit.

What Could’ve Been Better?
No remake is perfect, and HTTYD 2025 has a few stumbles:
Some fans may miss the animated charm: There’s a slight emotional buffer with live-action that doesn't always hit the same whimsical notes.
Pacing issues in the middle act: The training montage drags a bit longer than needed.
Some side characters like Snotlout and Fishlegs are underused compared to the animated version.
Still, these are minor when you consider the overall quality and respect shown to the source material.
